Education – Trinity Grammar Project

Trinity Grammar School, situated in the eastern Melbourne suburb of Kew, has upgraded its security with the installation of SALTO System’s XS4 and GEO electronic access control solutions.

The school has five campuses across the state of Victoria, with its main campus at Kew which is home to an Early Learning Centre (ELC), as well as Junior and Senior Schools. The Early Learning Centre provides an introduction to education for boys and girls between the ages of three and five years. The Junior School has 360 boys in 16 classes from Prep to Year 6. The Senior School has just over 900 boys in Years 7 and 8.

School security is probably one of the most sensitive issues facing today’s head teachers. With the school looking to control access and automatically secure doors at the end of the day, it was made aware by Eclipse Security Systems, the local SALTO Approved Partner, that it could achieve its security goals with the latest stand alone wire-free and wireless access control technology from leading educational security specialist SALTO Systems.

Greg Flood, Director of Eclipse Security Systems, explains ‘With young students on campus it is vital that we provide 24/7 on-campus security to ensure their safety at all times. The school is a very busy environment with lots of high-user traffic on its doors so it was vital that the security solution we recommended was robust, technologically advanced and capable of standing the test of time, which is why we chose to put forward SALTO Systems products.’

Products from SALTO’s XS4 range in a tough stainless steel finish have now been installed on over 200 doors across campus to step up security. These mainly consist of SALTO Wireless Network (SWN) doors externally and SALTO Virtual Network (SVN) doors internally. This combination gives the school the ability to adjust locking schedules quickly and easily on the external doors, as well as control emergency opening and lock down to the perimeter. Using SVN (data on card) doors internally, enables them to make considerable savings without any significant loss in functionality.

The school has been impressed with the technical capability of the products and the efficiency and cost effectiveness provided by the combination of SWN and SVN doors. In particular they like the ability of the SALTO Virtual Network (SVN) to facilitate additional use of the Mifare/DesFire smart cards to perform functions other than access control including photo ID printing and photocopying.

The contactless cards themselves read, receive and write information via the school’s student and staff ID cards. Since most access related information is kept encrypted on these cards, doors throughout the campus are able to update and receive information from the cards at any time. So not only is the system easy to use, but its functionality has all the benefits of a fully on line access control system at the cost of a standalone system.

The ‘smart’ ID cards build up ‘on-card’ audit trails through normal use giving the school complete control over access and providing the ability to see who accessed what door, where and when.

Cards can be programmed to allow access to specific rooms or areas within the school for selected periods only, with the doors auto locking at pre-specified times if required. And if card security is breached due to the loss or theft of a card, it can be instantly deleted without the need or cost of rekeying or changing locks ‘ saving the school time and money.’

Property Manager at Trinity Grammar School, adds ‘We’re impressed with the SALTO System as it gives us increased control over our school security. We like its scalability, its solution for every door, ease of use, ability to integrate into other areas and, not least, its cost!’

Hospitality – Gatwick Community Housing Project

The Gatwick, a former hotel turned rooming house now providing accommodation for disadvantaged people in the Port Phillip Bay area of Melbourne, Australia, has installed a SALTO access control system to provide advanced accommodation security.

Operated by the St Kilda Community Housing Ltd, a not-for-profit housing agency committed to the provision of affordable accommodation for low-income and disadvantaged single people, The Gatwick provides a home to people who have special needs. These can include issues such as a mental illness, drug and/or alcohol dependence; a history of homelessness or the risk of homelessness.

Given that Victoria is Australia’s most densely populated state and Melbourne its second-largest city, most of the population is concentrated in the area surrounding Port Phillip Bay. For those disadvantaged by a lack of financial resources when competing in the local mainstream housing market or lacking strong family attachments while experiencing social disadvantage The Gatwick provides a secure housing environment while getting back on their feet and finding their way back into mainstream society.

The building had acquired a reputation with both the local police and community, and the owner’s attempts to preserve the buildings’ historic grandeur were being negated by escalating malicious damage caused by a small number of residents. This was leading to increasing costs for repetitive maintenance and tenant welfare issues.

A contributory factor to this was that its old mechanical key system meant that rooms were not always as secure as they could have been and this meant that personal security issues were highlighted as significant concerns when the City of Port Phillip and St Kilda Community Housing decided to intervene and upgrade the building to improve the life of residents and provide them with a sense of ‘ownership’.

‘As the leading supplier of accommodation locking solutions, SALTO’s XS4 Mifare controlled electronic locking system with Departmental software plus wall reader/door controller mix was ideal for The Gatwick’ comments Dennis Mavropoulos, Business Development Manager, SALTO Systems Australia and New Zealand.

‘Mechanical keys are not only cumbersome to carry, but they can be time consuming and expensive to replace if lost ‘ not to mention the potential security implications ‘ and given that it is also impossible to

obtain any type of audit information showing which keys have opened which doors and when – it was decided mechanical locking had had its day.

Working in consultation with local SALTO approved installer Eclipse Security Systems, a highly secure and flexible access control system was designed to meet all of the needs of the building.

The advanced XS4 system now provides door level intelligence to control access to all external doors within the building for both staff and residents. Finished in satin stainless steel, these stand alone locks are specifically designed for use with both external and internal doors and are approved to withstand fire for one hour. Simple and quick to install, power is supplied via three AAA batteries good for up to 40,000 openings or around 3 years of normal use.

Each lock is simple and quick to install. They feature anti-vandal protection to safeguard their electronics, housed in the inner back plate, on the inside of the door. Their Mifare smartcards remove the need for keys, thus delivering considerable long term cost savings and removing the need to re-cut keys or fit replacement locks if a card is lost as it can be instantly deleted from the system,’ Mavropoulos continues.

Facilities Manager, St Kilda Community Housing Ltd, says ‘We’re pleased with the finished installation and with the performance of our new SALTO access control system. It delivers everything we’ve asked of it and we also like the fact that its scalable meaning we can add more doors to the system in future as needed.’
